Sewing Link UP

While cruising around the internet I saw some great posts on projects you may be interested in checking out:

Over on Craftzine there is a No-sew duct tape apron, the Fashion Incubator shows us all how to find the grainline on a sleeve, and Sew Mama Sew has a super cute free summer shirt pattern to download.

Also thank you to everyone who came to the meeting on the 26th! I’ll post again soon about the next meeting’s details – Sunday, May 10th is the date of the next meeting just to give you a heads up.

March Sewing Rebellion!

SUNDAY, MARCH 8th, 2009 – The next meeting of the Central Iowa Sewing Rebellion in Ames – Bring yourself, a friend, fabric scraps, zippers to sew, things to mend, food to share.

We will be learning how to recycle zippers from old clothing and how to sew them into your project! A simple zippered clutch will be demoed. Bring zippers to recycle, sew, and swap. Fabric will be provided to make your own zippered clutches. If you have a sewing machine, this would be a great meeting to get acquainted with it and the zipper foot.

Brunchluck (breakfast/lunch potluck) to start at noon, demos at 1ish, and sewing freesytle for all until 4 pm. Drop in when you can, leave when you need to. All are welcome!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The February meeting was a great sucess and much sharing of skills and ideas was achieved. So much so that we decided to start meeting twice a month! From now on the Sewing Rebellion will be every 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month. So in March the 8th and the 22nd. More updates forthcoming so check back later this week!

First Meeting Round Up!

DSC_0127

There was some great discussion and eats to be had. We enjoyed the brunchluck and started in on demos. We covered a lot of ground and thanks to Kate bringing in her dress pattern to work on, we went over the parts of a pattern and how to make darts.

We had some great instructions drawn up by Frau Fiber to get us started threading our needles and getting our buttons sewn back on.

We covered mending techniques: Mending holes with patches

Busted seams:

holes in sweater fabric:

Button sewing:

And how to sew up stretched out button holes (I know I’m happy to have my favorite sweater back in working order!)

This first meeting was such a great success. We brain stormed for future meetings and had a great time in general.

Next time we are going to take some of our favorite beat up shirts, take them apart the rest of the way, and draft up a pattern for them so we can make more + some great tote patterns provided by Frau Fiber!

I’ll post again soon about the upcoming meeting with more details! See you then!
